The Sopranos. Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Wire, Sex and the City, Game of Thrones. HBO seems to have a knack for creating top-notch TV. These shows are very different from one another, but they have one thing in common: after you become obsessed with one, you want to share it with your friends.

One way to encourage your friends to watch your favorite show so you can gush about it together is to give an HBO NOW Gift Card.
HBO NOW makes an excellent gift for many different occasions. This would be a unique gift to give to your dad for Father’s Day, your friend for her birthday, or a get well gift for someone facing a long recovery.
Here are the steps to purchase an HBO NOW subscription.
Steps for Gifting an HBO NOW Subscription
You may think that buying an HBO NOW gift card would be as easy as visiting the HBO website. Surprisingly, this doesn’t work. Let us give you the inside tips on how to purchase a gift card so your friends can get caught up on Game of Thrones.
Step 1: Find out if your friend has HBO NOW
It’s a lot more fun to surprise someone with a gift, but before purchasing HBO NOW for a friend, you may want to ask if they already have access to HBO. Some people use a friend’s login and since gift cards are non-returnable, you may be out money—and irritate your friend.
If your friend already has purchased HBO NOW, they can use the gift card after the current subscription expires. If their subscription is billed monthly to a debit or credit card, they’ll need to wait until the end of the billing cycle. They can find out when the credit card will be billed again on the account profile. Turn off the auto-renewal option so that the credit card will not be billed automatically for the next month.
When the subscription expires, add the gift card code from the back of the card. It’s not clear if you can use the same login and password when you pay for the content with a gift card as opposed to the credit card.
Step 2: Buy a gift card at a third-party location
Since HBO doesn’t sell their own gift cards, you’ll have to find one at a third-party retail store. Here is a list of stores where HBO NOW gift cards should be available.
- Best Buy
- Dollar General
- Family Dollar
- Home Depot
- Rite Aid
If you are unable to find a gift card at one of these locations, visit this gift card website.
Be careful not to purchase a gift card for the HBO store inadvertently. Those gift cards don’t work for HBO NOW.
Please note that HBO NOW is only available in the US or one of its territories.
You could also present your gift card in a unique package, like the one pictured above.
Step 3: Choose how much to spend on the gift
As of this writing, HBO Now costs $14.99 per month. If you purchase a gift card from the previously-linked gift card website, you can order a card in five-dollar increments from $25 to $100.
If you would like to offer your friend best wishes for her upcoming move by buying a six-month subscription to HBO NOW, you would need to buy a $90 gift card for the service.
Step 4: Assist your giftee in redeeming the gift card
While most of you will be able to give a gift card for HBO NOW to a friend and wait for a thank you note or text, some of you may need to assist your friend or family member with redeeming the gift. This is especially true if your friend has physical limitations or is uncomfortable with technology.
Direct your friend to the HBO NOW website from their computer or smart TV and have them sign up for an account. Enter the 10 or 12 digit code that is found on the back of the gift card. Enter the giftee’s state or territory and zip code. From there, your friend will create an account and choose a password.
Your friend or family member will not be required to enter a credit card number to use the gift card. When the credit from the gift card is used up, the member will no longer have access.
HBO NOW gift cards do not expire, so your friend can start the subscription when they have extra time on their hands to watch hours of TV.
HBO NOW: Frequently Asked Questions
HBO’s website is user-friendly, but there are some questions you may have about HBO NOW that aren’t answered on the website. Let us help.
How much does HBO NOW cost to send as a gift?
The nice thing about giving HBO NOW as a gift is that it enables you to spend as little or as much as you want. Although we don’t know the gift card increments that can be purchased at Target, Walmart, and other retailers, the online gift card store will allow you to buy them in five-dollar increments from $25 to $100.
Currently, the streaming service costs $14.99 per month, so it would make sense to buy at least a $30 gift card so your friend could use the service for two months. A year’s subscription would cost almost $180. You may need to purchase two gift cards if you intend to pay for the service for a year. HBO NOW gift cards do not expire.
You may consider purchasing gift cards in $30 intervals. This would enable someone to use the service for two months at a time, then take a break before redeeming the next gift card.
What’s included in HBO NOW?
HBO NOW gives those without cable access to content that HBO subscribers enjoy. This includes HBO’s original programming, as well as movies, sports content, and documentaries that the network provides for subscribers.
How does the recipient redeem the HBO NOW gift card?
Visit HBO’s gift card redemption website and enter the code found on the back of the gift card. After entering your location and zip code, you will be directed to a screen to sign up for an account. No credit card information is required if you are using a gift card to purchase the streaming service.
What’s the difference between HBO NOW and HBO GO?
HBO NOW is designed for those who do not have cable. It gives cord-cutters access to Game of Thrones and other content that their friends had been talking about for years.
HBO GO is available for traditional HBO subscribers to have access to content when they are away from their TV.
An HBO NOW gift card is a unique gift idea for someone who seems to have everything. Although this gift would be great for someone’s birthday or Christmas, you may think again when giving HBO as a sympathy gift.
Although you may enjoy the HBO series Six Feet Under, someone who recently lost a family member may not appreciate being reminded of such matters. Depending on how close you are to them, you can offer to run errands, help plan a virtual funeral on a platform like GatheringUs, or simply offer a shoulder for them to cry on instead.
